Signals with ADX

The Average Directional Index (ADX) does not tell you the market's direction; it tells you how strong the trend is. Together with its companion lines, +DI and −DI, it helps you decide whether to use trend-following tools or tools built for ranges. This sample strategy uses ADX as a gate: trade trends only when the trend is measurably strong.

Why this setup

Many strategies fail because they are used in the wrong market conditions. A moving-average crossover performs poorly in a range, and range strategies suffer in strong trends. An ADX above roughly 20 to 25 is commonly read as trending, and below 20 as weak or sideways. These are conventions, not laws. A rising ADX often says more than its absolute value.

Entry rules

  1. ADX (14) is above 20 and has been rising for at least two or three candles.
  2. +DI is above −DI.
  3. Wait for a small pullback in which price retreats but +DI stays above −DI.
  4. Enter when price breaks the high of the pullback candle.
  5. Skip the entry if ADX is very high and turning down; the trend may be in its late stage.

Exit and stop

  • Place the stop below the pullback low.
  • While ADX keeps rising, trail the stop below each swing low.
  • When ADX turns down from a high level, tighten the stop or take partial profit.
  • Exit fully if −DI crosses above +DI.

Risk notes

ADX lags. By the time it confirms strength, much of the move may already be over, so combine it with price structure. A falling ADX does not mean a reversal; it only shows that momentum is fading.

Important: This is a sample educational strategy, not a buy or sell recommendation. Test every rule first, with a backtest on historical data and then on a demo account, and decide whether to use or adapt it only after you understand how it behaves in different market conditions.

These strategies need testing (backtesting and a demo account) before use. Any buy or sell decision based on them is at your own risk.
