Signals with the CCI Indicator

The Commodity Channel Index (CCI) measures how far price has moved from its statistical average, scaled by mean deviation. Despite the name, it is used on stocks, forex and crypto as well. Readings above +100 or below −100 mark unusually strong moves. This sample strategy uses CCI to catch the start of momentum bursts in the direction of the trend.
Why this setup
Unlike RSI, CCI has no fixed ceiling or floor, so it can show very high or very low readings during strong moves. Two common uses are zero-line crosses as a trend filter and ±100 crosses as a momentum trigger. In this setup we combine both with a moving average so that trades are taken only with the main trend.
Entry rules
- Price is above the 100-period moving average, so the trend is up.
- During a correction, CCI (20) drops below zero.
- When CCI crosses back up through +100, momentum has returned; that is the entry trigger.
- Make sure the signal candle closes above the previous candle's high or the latest swing high.
- For shorts: price below the average, CCI rises above zero in a rally, then drops below −100.
Exit and stop
- Place the stop below the low of the correction.
- Close part of the position when CCI falls back below +100 after a strong peak.
- Close the rest when CCI crosses below zero.
- Do not hold the trade after a close on the wrong side of the 100 MA.
Risk notes
CCI is fast and sensitive, and in ranging markets it gives many misleading signals. Extreme readings such as +200 may be the start of a move rather than the end, so do not trade against the trend just because the number is large. Settings that work in one market rarely carry over unchanged to another.
Important: This is a sample educational strategy, not a buy or sell recommendation. Test every rule first, with a backtest on historical data and then on a demo account, and decide whether to use or adapt it only after you understand how it behaves in different market conditions.
These strategies need testing (backtesting and a demo account) before use. Any buy or sell decision based on them is at your own risk.
