Ichimoku Cloud Entry Strategy

Ichimoku Kinko Hyo packs several lines into one view: Tenkan-sen, Kijun-sen, the cloud (Senkou Span A and B) and the Chikou Span. It looks crowded at first, but it gives a quick read on trend, momentum and possible support and resistance areas. This sample strategy uses cloud breakouts confirmed by the other lines.
Why this setup
The cloud is plotted ahead of price and works as an area, not a single line. Price above the cloud points to an uptrend, below it to a downtrend, and inside it to indecision. A thick cloud usually slows price more than a thin one. Waiting for several Ichimoku components to agree helps you avoid entering the moment price merely pokes out of the cloud and falls back.
Entry rules
- Price closes above the cloud after trading inside or below it.
- Tenkan-sen is above Kijun-sen, or crosses above it.
- The future cloud plotted ahead of price is bullish (Senkou A above Senkou B).
- The Chikou Span is above the price of 26 periods ago, with no candles in its way.
- Enter on the next candle, or, if the breakout candle was very long, wait for a pullback to Kijun-sen.
Exit and stop
- Place the stop below Kijun-sen or below the top edge of the cloud, depending on distance.
- As Kijun-sen rises, move the stop up with it.
- Exit if price closes back inside the cloud.
- A bearish cross of Tenkan-sen below Kijun-sen can be a reasonable moment to take profit.
Risk notes
Ichimoku was designed for daily charts, and on low timeframes its signals become noisy. In trendless markets the cloud is thin and price crosses it repeatedly. Because stops based on Kijun-sen can be far away, choose a smaller position size so the risk per trade stays fixed.
Important: This is a sample educational strategy, not a buy or sell recommendation. Test every rule first, with a backtest on historical data and then on a demo account, and decide whether to use or adapt it only after you understand how it behaves in different market conditions.
These strategies need testing (backtesting and a demo account) before use. Any buy or sell decision based on them is at your own risk.
